Improving quality management with explainable artificial intelligence (XAI):
Good quality management is crucial for the success of businesses, especially in manufacturing. In our paper at Management Science, we developed, implemented, and evaluated a new, state-of-the-art technology that improves process quality using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Our XAI technology can locate root causes of bad quality and automatically suggest effective improvement actions. We evaluated our XAI technology in a large-scale field experiment at word-class semiconductor manufacturer (ABB Hitachi), where we successfully reduced the yield loss by more than 50%.
Monitoring global development aid through machine learning:
Monitoring global development aid is crucial to achieve progress the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To overcome limitations in existing monitoring systems, we supported the SDG Financing Lab in building a new, state-of-the-art monitoring system powered by machine learning and which eventually became the first-ever AI system at the OECD. An updated version of the machine learning framework that traces over 3 million activities with a budget of more than US $2.5 trillion has recently appeared in Nature Sustainability.
Quality Management for Manufacturing
EthonAI is an AI powered platform that detects and prevents quality defects in manufacturing. The start-up is on a mission to make AI solutions accessible to factory operators and engineers. The first applications have been validated in world-leading factories and have been proven to reduce production waste by up to 50% and increase job satisfaction for workers.

Process Optimization through automated Data Extraction
BLP Digital AG uses Artificial Intelligence to automate data extraction from documents. The company uses a custom build and unique combination of Image Recognition and Natural Langauge Processing to extract, interpret, classify and analyze unstructured data from many documents such as invoices, delivery notes or policies.
This approach is faster than a human and less prone to error. While increasing the bottom line of companies BLP's approach also improves the lifes of employees, shifting them away from repetitive and tedious tasks to more meaningful work.
